Moroni 2-3

Moroni 2: 1-2

The words of Christ, which he spake unto his disciples, the twelve whom he had chosen, as he laid his hands upon them- And he called them by name, saying: Ye shall call on the Father in my name, in mighty prayer; and after ye have done this ye shall have power that to him upon whom ye shall lay your hands, ye shall give the Holy Ghost; and in my name shall ye give it, for thus do mine apostles.

I found it interesting that he made their authority conditional. First they had to call upon the Father in mighty prayer before they would have power to give the Holy Ghost. Usually we think of priesthood power as transferred directly my the laying on of hands by those who are in authority. Perhaps this is part of the difference between power and authority. Authority is conferred upon us, it is simply given to us by those who already possess it, but true power in the priesthood is obtained by aligning our hearts with the Father through mighty prayer and through the atonement of Jesus Christ. And then once we have obtained the authority and power of the priesthood, what do we do with it?

Moroni 3:3

...to preach repentance and remission of sins through Jesus Christ, by the endurance of faith on his name to the end.

We are called as teachers, priests, elders, high priests, etc. to preach to all the world that they must change. That they must become something more, something better. That they must repent, and as they do they will be forgiven of all their mistakes and transgressions and receive a remission of their sins. And the way that they accomplish all of this is through Jesus Christ.

Real repentance is difficult, it involves changing your desires. We should not be timid in asking the world to change. It is our responsibility. It is the reason that we were given the priesthood. To help all men women and children come unto Christ and become like he is by having faith in him until the end of their lives. This doesn't mean we shouldn't be tolerant of other lifestyles and world views, just that we should invite them to change their views to align with Father in Heavens.

BUT the first step in this process is changing our own views and desires through faith in Christ and through mighty prayer in his name. Only then that we will receive the true power of God to do his work here on the earth.
